The joys of camping: Torre de la Peña II in Tarifa, Spain

Sunset at the beach at Mediterranean sea from Tarifa beach. Spain (2011-10)

Pretty picture - but you can't see it

Where is it?

Latitude: 36,069236°/ Longitude: 5,680854°/ Altitude: 104m

What can you expect?

The campground is located across the street from one of the best kite surfing beaches in Europe (as I was told). So when you’re into kite surfing I probably don’t need to say much more. However, most of the guests where elderly couples from the Netherlands, Germany and France traveling with their camper vans. Many of them seem to go to Torre de la Peña quite regularly. Other sights nearby include Gibraltar and Marbella.

Facilities

The campground is equipped with all the amenities you’d expect: there is electricity for each site, common restrooms and hot showers (several across the site, fairly clean), you can use the large pool and the tennis court, and at night you can hang out at the bar and have a bite to eat. Of course you’ll also find a couple of reasonably prised restaurants in the area (most of them not in walking distance). The campground also has a little store and you can order fresh (really fresh!) bread for breakfast. And for the bloggers and Facebook junkies among you: there is (free) Wi-Fi in the reception / bar area. Just ask for the code.

Outside world

The beach is just across the street. The least you should treat yourself to one night is the spectacular sunset over the Atlantic Ocean! And, yes: this is Africa you see not so far in the distance.

To get further away it’s best to have a car. But there is a fairly good bus system that you can use to get to Algeciras or Gibraltar, and from there on to cities likes Sevilla, Cadiz or Málaga. If you don’t want to eat out you’ll find huge shopping centers, for example between Algeciras and Gibraltar. This one also has an outdoor sports store (Decathlon) in case you find you need any more camping equipment.
