The joys of camping: Azilan in Chefchaouen, Morocco

Blue house in Chefchaouen, Morocco (2011-10)

Where is it?

Latitude: N 35,175980°/ Longitude: W 5,267086°/ Altitude: 763m

When did we stay there?

15 to 16 October, 2011 (1 night)

What can you expect?

The campground is located halfway up a mountain overlooking Chefchaouen. Many travelers on the beginning of an overland tour either through Morocco or further South are staying here. So be prepared for some interesting discussions.

Facilities

There are common restrooms (both Western and squatting style) and (cold) showers. However, when the electricity goes out so will the water… There is a laundry machine but it’s locked up. There is little shop and a little restaurant. You’re probably better off bringing your own food or eating in the medina in Chefchaouen. The tab water is drinkable. And if you’d rather have a roof over your head: a youth hostel is located just outside the campground.

Outside world

Outside the campground you can either go up or down the mountain. Up will let you enjoy a couple of nice hikes in the Rif Mountains. Down gets you to Chefchaouen which boasts a nice little medina with lots of little shops and restaurants. Also look out for the unusual octagonal mosque near the suk. Other towns within a couple hours drive are Tetouan, and the capital Rabat is also not far away.
