The joys of camping: Bush camping 111km from Marrakesh, High Atlas Mountains, Morocco

Sign Marrakech 111km during African Trails Atlas Mountain bush camp, Morocco (2011-10)

Where is it?

Latitude: N 31°/ Longitude: W 7°/ Altitude: 2175m

When did we stay there?

28 to 29 October 2011 (1 night – thank God only 1 night!)

What can you expect?

This bush camp is one of the most extreme we’ll hopefully find on this trip. Somewhere along the road through the High Atlas Mountains towards Marrakesh this seems to be the place where truck drivers passing through dispose of their rubbish, go for a wee and refill their water supplies. Ghastly winds make it almost impossible to light a fire. Much to the dismay of our guide we weren’t really prepared for snow camping and therefore opted to put as many people as possible into our 2x2m tents (4 people) to brave the night.

Facilities

No toilets but running water – if you fancy an ice cold stream. No Wi-Fi. No tabs for drinking water (the local truck drivers seem to be drinking the stream water, though). Lots of rocks. No firewood. Watch dogs – or rather wild dogs that live off the rubbish truck drivers dispose off here.

Outside world

If you like to hike you’ll find plenty of opportunities around here. But I suggest you find a B’n’B or hotel if you want to stick around for more than the night.
