The Alle Torri B&B is an interior designer’s fever dream full of flowers, mirrors, books that are glued to walls and ceilings, clocks, luxury designer shopping bags, thank you notes from happy guests… But to my amazement, they manage to pull it off without having the place look stuffed and crowded. Rates are very affordable, and owner Vittorio is passionate about making his guests feel at home.

Location & Getting to the Alle Torri

The Alle Torri B&B is a 30-minute walk away from the center of Verona and it takes about the same time to walk there from the train station. However, there are plenty of buses going in both directions, and if you opt for the Verona Card you can ride the bus for free.

The part of town the Alle Torri is located in is a residential area with modern (2nd half of the 20th century) apartment blocks. In an apartment on the 4th floor of one of the more modern and higher rising ones lives this bed and breakfast.

The somber exterior doesn’t quite do justice to the funkiness that awaits the guest, once you’ve stepped inside: plastic flowers, flower stickers, notes, books, clocks, a parrot lamp, mirrors… It’s like an interior designer has gone rogue. But it works: it doesn’t look tacky or seem crowded.

Host Vittorio’s little paradise features three rooms, each furnished with a different theme.

Upon arrival, he routinely but charmingly explained how to best tour the city. I am guessing (and the changing occupants during my three nights there speak to this theory) that not many people stay in Verona for more than two nights.

There is no reception and the owner only present for cleaning and check-in. So you have to give a definitive hour of arrival and there is a penalty for arriving more than an hour late. Once you have checked in you receive a key to the house and the apartment to come and go as you please.

Rooms & Facilities

My room was a double with access to a large balcony, lushly decorated with loads of mirrors, clocks on the walls and “flying” books attached to the walls and the ceiling. Everything was clean and well-maintained — I didn’t even find dust on any of the decorations.

The bathroom is shared by all rooms. So mornings can be tricky; not only because of the number of people but more importantly because hot water runs out quite quickly…

If everybody is a bit respectful the place is quiet. You do hear both, people in the hallway and some of the noise outside, but I found neither particularly disturbing (and I am a light sleeper).

WiFi is OK, but not enough to stream movies.

Rooms have TV.

I found the Alle Torri for €30 a night on Hostelworld. On top of the room rate, there is a €2.50 per night tourist tax. You can only pay cash.

Food & Drink

As the name of the establishment promises, breakfast is included. However, as unusual as the Alle Torri is their way of serving breakfast: bags of tea, coffee, and coffee k-cups along with fruit and the usual Italian breakfast fare of sweet cakes in plastic await the guests upon check-in in their rooms. In the hallway right outside, you will find a fridge stocked with milk, yogurt and juice, cornflakes, more cakes and biscuits, more fruit and the coffee maker. That way you can have breakfast any time of the day.

As a courtesy, there are also small bottles with (non-alcohol) aperitivo drinks and water in the room.

Guests also have a microwave at their disposal. Which is enough, if you go shopping in the supermarket right next door — it specializes in frozen food.

But you might just as well eat out. Your host will happily point out less touristy restaurants all over town. I liked two places nearby: the Ristorante Pizzeria San Marco on Via Don Luigi Sturzo, just off Via San Marco, and the Doppio Zero (’00’) on Via San Marco, where two charming elderly Veronese gentlemen make deliciously creative pizzas, which are paid by weight (approx. €4 to €6 per slice, round pizzas available on request).

While a fully equipped kitchen exists (mind you, we are in an apartment), it is usually locked. So best to contact Vittorio to find out the conditions of using it during your stay.
